IDRF, Muslims and Friends of Fort McMurray are holding an Iftar and Fundraising Dinner on June 30th, 2016 at Crystal Fountain Banquet Hall, Markham to raise funds in support of victims of Fort McMurray Forest Fire.
Albertans’ lives have been in upheaval since the wildfire, fuelled by strong winds, overwhelmed crews last Tuesday afternoon, cutting the main road through Fort McMurray and sending its 80,000 inhabitants fleeing north and south.
By Tuesday, the Alberta government said the fire had grown – as expected – to about 229,000 hectares after two separate fires joined together. The last damage assessment estimated 2,400 structures, mostly homes, burned in the south and southwest areas of the city. Many might not have a home waiting for them.
IDRF is currently providing emergency relief but is assessing the long term needs and would like to participate in the building of destroyed houses and other capital projects once the residents are allowed to return to their homes.
At a time when Muslims will be observing the Holy month of Ramadan, we are calling upon everyone to come together and show caring and generosity towards members of our ‘Canadian family’ who need our help at their time of need.
