Canada - Women’s Sewing Circle and Collective PDF Print E-mail

This project will provide marginalized newcomer and refugee women with the training and skills necessary for sustainable employment, culminating in the establishment of a women’s sewing collective enterprise.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES:

This is a two-phase project. In Year 1, participants undertake an 8-month training in sewing skills, and receive instruction in business English and entrepreneurship, with the aim of enabling these women to pursue employment opportunities in tailoring and garment construction. Women who complete the program successfully and wish to work independently receive a sewing machine to make their business venture feasible. In Year 2, selected invited participants from year 1 complete a more rigorous training, and work together to develop an independent sewing collective business.
