Former IDRF Board Member supports IDRF through his book sales PDF Print E-mail
AshmeadsBook.jpg"I also visited the homes, in Guyana, of a few beneficiaries who had attended a Livelihood/Microfinance project that was partly financed by IDRF in Canada. After more than a year, some of the women still maintained their sewing businesses regularly, while others sewed only children's school uniforms. Other women, who had attended the catering classes, were also still active in their catering businesses", says a new book entitled Understanding Poverty & International Development Cooperation by Ashmead A. Ali, a former IDRF Board Member.

The foreword states that Ali’s book provides a much-needed brief analysis of the many problems that poor countries have faced, and still do today, in their hope to wrestle and beat poverty. It offers to both the layperson and the informed the intricacies and problems in international development. It is a call for action that world leaders and the world public must not ignore. It is, most importantly, a reminder to ... poor-country leaders that, in the words of Greg Mills in Why Africa is Poor, “poverty need not be an option.”

IDRF connects with key players to address global WASH crisis PDF Print E-mail

Global water crisis – addressing urgent issues:

  • 2.6 Billion people lack access to safe, functioning toilets
  • Close to a Billion people lack access to clean drinking water
  • 4000 Children die every day from water-borne diseases = 1.4 Million every year
  • $1 spent improving sanitation = $9 of economic benefit

Global lack of adequate safe water and sanitation services kills thousands of people every day, and results in impoverishment, disability, and loss of dignity for countless others. On November 15, 2012, IDRF Program Manager Jessica Ferne had the opportunity to attend WASH Canada’s campaign launch, celebrating unique approaches to effectively addressing the global water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) crisis. The event brought together a range of Canadian stakeholders, and featured several exciting presentations, including “One Picture, One Story” a digital gallery, showcasing innovative projects.

The event was energizing and reaffirmed the importance of IDRF’s commitment to supporting sustainable solutions to the global WASH crisis through collaboration, innovative action, and commitment to success.
