Pakistan -Promoting Literacy in Underprivileged Areas Pakistan's literacy rate is very low consequently leading to extreme poverty. According to UNDP in 2005 the official literacy rate in Pakistan was 49.9% (the actual rate, however, is much lower). There is an urgent need of schools for children, especially in the rural areas where there are either no schools or not sufficient schools to educate the community children. DIL Canada has established five schools in such areas to educate the underprivileged children of that community and also to raise awareness to the importance of education for children, especially the girl-child, amongst the community elders.
Project Description:
The first phase of this project involved the sponsorship
of two schools (DIL Abid Grammar School and DIL Sikandar School) over
five months; and one over two years in underprivileged areas of
Pakistan. This involved
covering the operating costs of the schools, including teachers
salaries and training, and salaries for administrative staff.
The second phase involved the promotion
of literacy and access to basic education in the underprivileged areas
through sponsoring seven schools over a one year period. These schools
were: Abid Grammar School, Al-Imran Memorial School, Paradise School,
Muhammad School, Sikander School, Mehran School, and Rifah-e-aam
School.
The third phase aimed to eradicate
illiteracy by providing primary and secondary level quality education
to the underprivileged children in the DIL Canada school community.
More specifically, the project supported and managed DIL Canada's 5
schools by providing necessary funds to sustain the cost of education,
administration, teacher salaries/training and school maintenance.
The fourth phase of the project aimed once again to eradicate illiteracy by providing primary and
secondary level quality education to the underprivileged children in
the DIL Canada school communities. IDRF has supported DIL's five
schools by providing necessary funds to sustain the cost of education,
administration, teacher salaries/training and school maintenance.
