PROJECT  DESCRIPTION

Within the worst-affected areas of southern Ayeyawaddy and Yangon Divisions visited by HOPE, the following was witnessed by the project partners:

  • extensive damage / destruction of power, communication, and transportation infrastructure
  • severe diarrhea
  • no food in delta areas, food prices doubled in less that 24 hours of the disaster
  • extreme lack of potable water; water contamination due to salt water and decaying animal/human bodies.
  • insecurity, as marauding groups loot any/all available resources, threatening survivors and seriously disrupting relief efforts

The main objective of the project was to meet the basic needs of affected population in the cyclone affected areas and to reduce the suffering of the people, enabling them to recover from the impact of the cyclone disaster.

The following activities were undertaken:

  • distribution and administration of medicines
  • distribution of clothing, chlorine water treatment, and funds to purchase food and other available items
  • distribution of 810 litre capacity water purification systems
  • medical treatments, surgeries, setting broken bones, etc.
  • assessment of community infrastructure to work with in the future, and identification of issues of inclusive reconstruction processes, trauma, etc.
