PAST PROJECT The crowd awaiting their turn to see the doctor, while the nurse talks to them.jpg
The project provided free outpatient services to 480 patients (especially children under 5), screened 800 women in the child bearing ages, provided free circumcission to at least 700 male children, conducted outreaches in the community, and conducted 3 free medical camps in the community.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Bomu Medical Centre is located in the heart of the slums of Mombasa district in the Coastal Province of Kenya. A great majority of Kenyans live below the poverty line and earn less than a dollar a day. Women and children are the worst targets. Leading causes of mortality in children include diarrhoea, malaria, malnutrition, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infections, and skin infections. The under 5 mortality is one of the highest in Coast Province with 116 deaths/1000 live births (Kenya Demographic Health Survey - 2003). Contributory factors include poverty, illiteracy, lack of access to the health facilities, poor hygiene and the high cost of acquiring good health care. Bomu Medical Centre is faced with the challenge of the management of all these conditions in the different groups of age and gender.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

  1. To provide free outpatient services to 480 patients (especially children under 5) who cannot afford to meet the cost of consultation, diagnostic methods and treatment at the clinic.
  2. To screen 800 women in the child bearing ages who attend the clinic for cervical lesions and malignancies by the use of pap smears.
  3. To provide free circumcission to at least 700 male children under 15 and the adult males who consent.
  4. To conduct outreaches in the communities for the purpose of information, education and communication of the right messages on safe water, sanitation and hygiene, correct use of insecticide treated bed nets, early signs of cervical cancer, and the importance of immunization in children.
  5. To conduct objective assessment of the nutritional status in any child attending the clinic followed up by nutrional counseling to the mother/caregiver.
  6. To conduct 3 free medical camps in the community and to include in this consultation, diagnosis and treatment of ailments and to extend this to specialised consultation where appropiate.
