PAST PROJECT
The project reduced the waiting time of patients waiting for eye operations performed under general anaesthesia. Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi is one of the few eye care centers in the region that offers its patients the option of anaesthesia, which makes the patient unconscious for the duration of the surgery. In addition, the program provided backup intensive medical care services with the provision of additional anaesthesia equipment, vital monitors, intensive care paraphernalia and trained personnel.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION Al-Shifa Trust is an international centre of excellence for control and prevention of blindness and is the main referral centre in the country. Al-Shifa Trust performs all types of eye operations under general anaesthesia in young, adult, and elderly patients, whereas most other eye care centres lack the facility to perform operations with general anaesthesia. Over the last few years, there has been almost a 3-fold increase in the number of patients in need of surgery under general anaesthesia, expanding the waiting time for patients at Al-Shifa Trust to as much as 2-3 months. In response, IDRF aims to reduce the patient's waiting time to almost zero, to strengthen department of general anaesthesia, and to provide backup intensive medical care services with the provision of additional anaesthesia equipment, vital monitors, intensive care paraphernalia and trained personnel.
