PAST PROJECT
This project established the capacity for effective community managed solid waste management systems in Waruku village. The project aimed to tap into the potential of unemployed youth in the area by creating employment. In addition, it strengthened social cohesion within the Waruku village by addressing environmental sanitation in the entire settlement. This was done by bringing together the landowners, tenants and those living on public land to address the solid waste management and drainage challenges jointly.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Waruku is partly an informal settlement and partly a recognized peri
urban area in Kangemi, Nairobi which suffers inadequate, unsafe and
inefficient water supply and environmental sanitation systems. Being
one of the more than 200 informal settlements in the City of Nairobi,
Waruku's residents live in increasingly overcrowded conditions fostered
by rural-urban migration of people. Key water and sanitation problems
include drainage, sanitation, and waste management.
OBJECTIVES
The project aimed to:
-
Create a community network spearheaded by the youth to carry out door to door solid waste collection.
- Build network leadership for marketing f recycled material, networking and finance management
- Improve hygiene practices and environmental sanitation through community involvement
- Improve drainage in the village through lining of 800 main drain and 2 x 200 m feeder drain
