PAST PROJECT
This project provided needy people of Palestine with food relief kits during the Ramadan in Khan Younis Governorate.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
The humanitarian crisis for civilians in the Gaza Strip is still evident as a result of Israeli's imposed blockade on Gaza in 2007. Food, water and fuel are all in short supply causing major disruption in daily life for the population of 1.5 million.
During June 2010, the economic situation in the occupied Palestinian territory improved slightly but remains precarious, particularly in the Gaza Strip. The rate of employment is still very low by international standards while the unemployment rate of nearly 40 per cent in Gaza is among the highest in the world. The high level of unemployment, associated with low purchasing power of citizens in Gaza Strip, has made Palestinian families in Gaza Strip unable to secure their basic food needs.
IDRF in partnership with The Welfare Association implemented the "Distribution of Ramadan Food Relief Packages" Project which benefited 680 poor families in Khan Younis Governorate (South) of Gaza Strip, focusing on the marginalized eastern village areas (Bani Suhalia, Khiza'a, Abasan Kabeera and Abasan Saghera). Families received high-quality and regular main food items consumed by the average Palestinian family that are culturally appropriate.
The breaking of the daylight fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is customarily celebrated by families together, as is the 3-day holiday marking the end of month-long fast. The project resonated well with the beneficiary population of needy families.
GOALS & OBJECTIVES
- Alleviated the economic burden on 680 destitute families, in the Eastern areas of Khan Younis Governorate, through the provision of free food parcels containing basic food items necessary for families, during Ramadan.
- Promoted the health and well-being of 680 families.
EXPECTED RESULTS & OUTPUTS
- Food parcels were distributed to 680 families in project's target areas. (E.g. rice, sugar, flour, tea, dates, oil for cooking, jam, etc)
- The basic food needs of target families were met.
- Poor families' food consumption needs were supported during a period of local fasting.
- Beneficiary families were satisfied and felt supported.
