PAST PROJECT
This project provided outreach diagnostic health services free of cost to poor, needy and destitute population in J&K. The service was also provided to the general population at subsidized rates across Jammu & Kashmir.
For this project, IDRF acknowledges the financial support of AFMI-Canada (Association For Marginalised Individuals).
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & BACKGROUND
Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) has been going through political unrest and armed conflict for many decades resulting in sustained degradation and disruption in the social cultural fabric of society. The consistent unrest, colossal loss of human life and property has left a distinctive mark on every aspect of collective life: be it the social support system; development opportunities and livelihood; health and education; legal aid and community coping potentials, etc. To be more precise, health service is in fact one of the areas in J&K most neglected and in dire need.
IDRF and the J&K Yateem Foundation (JKYF) worked together to provide health services free of cost to the poor, needy and destitute population in J&K. The service was also provided to the general population at subsidized rates across Jammu & Kashmir, particularly in rural areas. The project assisted in overcoming the shortage of medical diagnostic investigation facilities available at government run hospitals and provided timely diagnosis and subsequent treatment, which helped to avoid delay in getting adequate drugs for the poor and destitute patients. Timely service also reduced the suffering of patients by allowing them to avail affordable services in terms of medical consultation, diagnostic tests and prescribed medicines. Overall, the IDRF/JKYF Health Centre acted as a catalyst to minimize the trend of self medication among the population, who has been deprived of proper health care.
PLANNED ACTIVITIES
- Outreach Health Camps: 10 camps were organized, providing basic medication to people and screening those who required further medication and diagnostic consultation.
- Referral Services: Patients screened for psycho social issues in the health camps were referred to the appropriate specialist services. The free referral services covered two types of cost: Medication Cost and Services charges on Medical Diagnostic Costs.
- Emergency medical/food kit support to the people affected by the prevailing situation: Families were assisted with basic food kits, bedding and other necessary items.
- Sensitization workshop with ICDS workers and school teachers: Local partner, JKYF undertook school awareness programmes through which it reached out to children who were more prone and exposed to the trauma caused by conflict. This workshop trained teachers about the symptoms of stress, anxiety, trauma and how to manage it without outside intervention. This batch of trained personnel within the school system will continue to provide support to children even after this project ends.
