PAST PROJECT This project provided emergency livelihood support aimed to support 200 vulnerable IDPs in Mogadishu through food distribution and pit latrine construction.
PROJECT BACKGROUND: The humanitarian crisis in Banadir region is continuing to deteriorate due to the ongoing fighting, displacement, poor shelter, high IDP presence, trade disruptions and high food items prices. Increased IDP population settlements and host communities accompanied by worst droughts occurred in the country since 60 years and loss of livelihoods and assets has increased level of malnutrition particularly among children below 5 years and elderly. On the other hand, recently settled IDPs are claiming sanitation and hygienic problems. Due to the lack of toilets, they defecate in the open areas thereby resulting in environmental pollution, poor sanitation and excreta-related diseases like cholera and diarrhoea. Many children and old aged people die weekly or daily of these diseases and other excreta related diseases. IDRF and IFEDA collaborated together for a project, which provided emergency livelihood support aimed to support 200 vulnerable IDPs in Mogadishu city through food distribution intervention and the construction of 25 pit latrines. Each of 200 IDPs families received a monthly amount of 50kg of maize, 6kg of vegetable cooking oil and 15 kg of pulses. During the project period, 20 tones of maize, 3600 tones of vegetable cooking oil and 6 tonnes of pulses were distributed.
