CURRENT PROJECT

The project will provide 6700 people from poor communities suspected of having cancer with free medical consultation including review of available diagnostic (Radiology & Pathology) reports (the “Medical Consultation”) at Walk-in-Clinic of the Organization at Peshawar, Pakhtunkhawa. Eligible patients may, at sole discretion of the Organization, be accepted for financially supported treatment at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital as per guidelines of its walk-in clinic.

For this project, IDRF acknowledges the financial support of Human Emergency Assistance And Rehabilitation Trust (HEART).

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore, Pakistan is recognized for providing state-of-the-art treatment & care to poor cancer patients, irrespective of their ability to pay. In Pakistan, every year it is suspected that a hundred to two hundred people fall victim to cancer. Being a developing country where majority of its people do not have access to even elementary health care and facilities, this ailment is the ultimate symbol of hopelessness and almost certain death. Even the treatable malignancies are mostly diagnosed too late or when even the most expensive treatment cannot turn the course of the disease. In an effort to detect cancer at an earlier stage, free walk-in clinics have been established in different areas of the country like Karachi & Peshawar for initial screening of patients. The Peshawar Clinic was established keeping in view the high number of cancer patients and because of the dearth of local oncological care patients had to spend thousands of rupees to come to Lahore for their initial assessment. This is now done at their door step.

IDRF and SKMCH&RC will provide free consultation and advice to help approximately 6,700 poor patients (male, female & children) in the initial screening for cancer at the Walk in Clinic during the year 2012. Upon confirmation of the disease and staging, patients will be accepted for financially supported treatment at the state-of-the-art Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre in Lahore, for treatment.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

The primary motive of the outreach services is to facilitate poor patients far away from the Hospital. The Hospital is constantly liaising with the local medical staff, the local hospitals and other health units in the northern area to promote referrals to the free outreach services.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES:

The Walk in Clinic is currently staffed with one Consultant, one Medical Officer, a Nurse and a Patient Care Officer. Nearly 18-20 patients with the suspicion of cancer are seen on a daily basis. The entire consultation process and review of diagnostic scans is done free of cost.
