This project will provide rehabilitation in District Dadu, Sindh Province. Focus areas will include shelter, food security, clean water sanitation, health care, livelihoods, reforestration, disaster risk reduction and cash-for-work.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

In 2010 and 2011, massive floods caused immense destruction in Pakistan. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) the calamity damaged or destroyed 1,894,530 houses, making shelter construction one of the greatest needs in the country.

In May 2012, the International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF) initiated a project to construct 60 one-room permanent shelters for families without homes in Village Pir Mashaikh- a small community in the southern province of Sindh, Pakistan. The residents of this village have been living in temporary shelters since the floods of 2010 and 2011.

This initiative has been launched by IDRF Pakistan – the newly expanded office of IDRF Canada – which was established this year following numerous successful projects implemented in Pakistan by IDRF Canada since 1991.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES:

  • To provide sustainable homes to people living in temporary shelters in order for them to rebuild their lives and provide protection against future monsoon rains.
  • To engage beneficiaries and community leaders the in design, implementation and monitoring on the shelters

PROJECT BENEFICIARIES:

This project will benefit 60 families from the poorest communities in District Dadu. The average family size in the district is six; therefore, a total of 360 men, women and children will benefit from newly constructed homes.
