The project will improve key skills in literacy and numeracy and small business management for 4,000 women in Senmichel, Gonayiv, Gwomon, Janrabel, and Pòdpe regions of northern Haiti.

For this project, IDRF acknowledges the financial support of Fonkoze Santa Barbera.

PROJECT BACKGROUND:

53% of Haitians are illiterate and/or innumerate. Illiteracy has an enormously negative impact on the day to day life of Haitians.

IDRF and Fonkoze are working together on a project, which will target poor, rural micro-business entrepreneurs who are unlikely to be able to perform basic functions like writing their name or keeping track of expenses by writing them down. The goal of this education project will be to improve key skills in literacy and numeracy and small business management for 4,000 women in Senmichel, Gonayiv, Gwomon, Janrabel, and Pòdpe regions of northern Haiti. This will help women acquire the skills they need to succeed, make their family stronger and assist them in rebuilding their lives.

PLANNED ACTIVITIES:

  • Visiting all Fonkoze credit centers in the targeted area;
  • Analyzing the centers’ educational needs;
  • Recruiting monitors from among the centers’ members;
  • Coordinating training sessions for all monitors;
  • Administering pre-tests to participants;
  • Supervising opening of all four-month sessions;
  • Supervising monitors as they administer mid-session evaluation in all centers;
  • Administering final evaluations in all centers;
  • Reporting session results.
