Supporting the Deaf Reach School

In a country with one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world, over 1 million children are diagnosed as deaf. More than 50% of Pakistan’s population currently reside in rural areas having little to no access to specialized resources for children with disabilities. For those students who have attended specialized schools, they often face additional barriers in communication due to their parents’ and teachers’ inability to effectively communicate with them. As a result, elementary and secondary school graduation rates among deaf students remain very low, negatively impacting their future job prospects and earning potential.

IDRF and the Family Educational Services Foundation (FESF) have been working to alleviate the gap in deaf education in Karachi, through the Deaf Reach program. With a total of six campuses based in the provinces of Karachi, Hyderabad, Rashidabad, Nawabshah, Sukkur and Lahore, the Deaf Reach program has currently benefitted over 5,000 deaf students in Pakistan.  These students are taught using the FESF developed academic curriculum, which includes academic and vocational skills training, a job placement program and Pakistan sign language development classes.

Recently, IDRF conducted another phase of this project, which further provided students with the tailored FESF academic curriculum and deaf education training for teachers. As a result, this project enhanced the quality of education for male and female deaf students in Pakistan. Safe and reliable transportation to and from school was also provided to the majority of male and female students based on their needs. Through your generous support, 230 boys and girls of the Deaf Reach schools were able to further develop their skills and knowledge.

Our Children, Our Future

The project contributes to the improvement of the quality of education and enhancing the educational achievement of 400 school students annually who are experiencing educational challenges. The project has 3 different levels of interventions:

The first intervention provides Remedial Classes to 400 children annually who have learning difficulties and their level of educational achievement is below 65%.

This is in addition, CFTA includes the following activities:

Child-led academic research in coordination with Al Azhar University and Palestine University in Gaza.

Living the future careers which will guide the child into the world of work by giving them the opportunity to spend days with professionals and learn about the career they selected or are interested in. for example to facilitate for them to spend a day with the firefighters, nurses, doctors, and engineers, etc.

The second intervention includes providing psychological support to enrolled children in the education support program. The psychosocial support tools include expressive art, drama as therapy and other tools that are suitable for the age groups. The psychosocial support activities aimed at improving the psychosocial wellbeing of children and therefore their educational achievements. Individual counselling, groups, and referrals are implemented as part of the intervention.
Extracurricular activities are organized for children as part of the stress release activities. This include; trips open days and open recreational activities which involve the parents as well.

The third component of the project is using the art for education and advocacy through child-led activities. This helped building confident of the children, empower them and providing them with the opportunity to participate publicly through their own art productions and activities. This includes life skills training, leadership, creative writing, and child-led advocacy.
