IDRF and The Indus Hospital in Pakistan will provide quality cancer treatment to children under 18, specifically targeting Leukemia & Lymphoma, through the provision of medicines, entirely free of cost to the patients.
As per the Karachi South and Punjab Cancer Registry, it is estimated that around 8000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year in Pakistan. The cure rate of childhood cancer in Pakistan is low due to late diagnosis, advanced level of the disease at presentation and high rate of abandonment. There has been a rising trend of referrals at our center; there were 1026 referrals in 2019 as compared to 573 in 2014. About 44% are from Karachi, 37% from interior Sindh, 15% from Baluchistan and rest from other parts of country and Afghanistan.

How IDRF is Helping

Every year, about 1,000 new cases of childhood cancer are registered and treated at Pediatric Oncology Department of The Indus Hospital. 45% of cases are Leukemia, Lymphoma 16%, abdominal tumors 12%, sarcomas 10%, brain tumors 7%, Retinoblastoma 6% and all others 4%. These children are referred from all provinces of Pakistan and Afghanistan as Indus Hospital provides free of cost quality treatment to all children suffering from cancer. In developing countries like Pakistan, the lack of cancer awareness, expertise, cancer centers combined with the inability to pay for the treatment are some of the key challenges that have led to the rise in death due to cancer.

Our Impact

Pediatric Oncology patients will be the direct beneficiaries. Selection is based on clinical diagnosis of childhood cancer. Assessing from the load of cancer patients and available statistics – we can say Indus pediatric cancer complex will reach at least 1,000 patients in a year. Ensuring availability of medicine will improve their health outcome.
