As one of IDRF’s Canadian projects, L2L expands IDRF’s impact closer to home for children in need of educational support. A registered charitable organization, L2L’s goal is to empower students to help one another socially and academically through free, personalized peer tutoring. L2L aims to increase students’ academic performance while nurturing the development of leadership skills, empathy and mentorship. Founded in 2002, L2L has grown from a small initiative to an active program in participating schools across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area. Using a curriculum emphasizing youth leadership and personalized support, we train elementary and secondary students as Tutors to provide one-on-one academic help and mentorship to their Peers. Tutors develop leadership skills and self-confidence, and in turn, their Peers receive academic support and mentorship from a positive youth role model. We serve all students with a focus on underserved groups and vulnerable communities in Neighbourhood Improvement Areas.

Dedicated to creating new partnerships, L2L is customizing its programming for First Nations students and is running a pilot project designed for select schools in the GTA to address the achievement gap among First Nations students.

  • Students are the heart of our program. L2L Tutors develop mentorship skills, build their resume, and increase their capacity to act as leaders in their school communities and beyond. L2L Peers are actively supported by their Tutors towards academic success, and develop the strategies, confidence, and drive to maintain this achievement and to tackle future challenges.
  • L2L is serving more students than ever before. Over 14 years, L2L has reached 17,000+ students, providing 310,000+ hours of positive youth engagement.
  • We serve our communities. Our program is offered at no cost to families. The majority of participating schools are located in lower-income and under-resourced areas, where many families cannot afford tutoring or extra-curricular activities. L2L’s program is customized in every school to ensure that the maximum number of students can participate.
  • Our training program delivers results. L2L’s Tutor Training Curriculum is developed in consultation with leading experts in student success, and is taught by dedicated Trainers with 25+ years of experience in education. Our curriculum identifies and leverages individual student strengths and interests to make tutoring more effective.
